Our Middle East trip last year

Sharman and I took a trip to the Middle East January 2008, staying a week in Dubai for a conference (also visiting my sister Karen and her family); then a second week in Jordan and Israel.

Here is some video.

Jordan
We spend a full day in Petra, the ancient city voted second of the Seven Wonders of the World. Unhurried, under-developed, sweet and gentle Nabataean bedoins, absolutely wonderful.

Entering Petra - After walking 10 minutes through a sliver of a canyon, all of a sudden you see through a crack - the dramatic entrance into the city! Note how unrushed and tranquil the setting is. At 10:30 in the morning, such a beautiful feeling!

Petra's Monastery - Many people don't climb up to the Monastery. You hike up these steps beyond the main city (Sharm took a donkey!) and arrive at a vista where you can see surrounding mountains including Aaron's Mountain.

Longer Clip of Petra (3 min) - This includes the entry and our encounter with an 8-year old goatherd up at the monastery.

Israel
After three days in Jordan we crossed over to Israel down south at Eilat. We spent about 5 days in Israel, seeing all parts of the small country.

On the Sea of Galilee - What a joy spending a cloudy/misty day visiting different sites around that sea.

Sunset Surfers at Tel Aviv - We stayed a couple nights at a friend's place in Tel Aviv - Alik Vatikay has a wonderful small apartment in central Tel Aviv near a busy marketplace. This beach footage is across from the King David Hotel where I stayed in 2003, while Colin Powell was giving his UN war speech (no tourists in town back then!).

We lost our camera on that trip, so video is all we've got!
